The Head & Heart Clinic
After a clinically significant cardiac event or procedure, many patients experience anxiety, depression, panic symptoms, insomnia, irritability, loss of confidence, fear of another event, medication fatigue, or difficulty returning to normal life.
Led by Patrick M. Mahon, ACNP, PMHNP, the Head & Heart Clinic at Veritas Psychiatry & Wellness provides specialized psychiatric care for patients recovering from serious cardiac illness. This service is uniquely informed by clinical expertise in both psychiatric and acute cardiac care and offers mood, anxiety, sleep, and behavioral support for patients navigating the emotional and psychological effects of cardiac disease.
Who is this for?
The Head and Heart Clinic is designed for patients who have experienced:
-
Heart attack or acute coronary syndromes
-
Heart failure diagnosis or hospitalization
-
Cardiac Surgery, including coronary bypass, valve surgery, or other major procedures
-
ICU Admission or prolonged hospitalization
-
New cardiac medications or lifestyle restrictions
-
Fear, anxiety, or depression after a cardiac event
-
Difficulty adjusting to a new diagnosis or physical limitation
-
Sleep disturbance, panic symptoms, irritability, or loss of motivation or self-esteem
How Can Veritas Help?
Care may include psychiatric assessment, medication management, therapy/counseling, behavioral support, sleep optimization, coping strategies, coordination with other medical providers, and practical guidance for rebuilding daily routines after cardiac illness.
How is this approach different?
Many psychiatric practices understand anxiety and depression. However, few, if any, have a meaningful understanding of the lived experience of a cardiac hospitalization, ICU-level illness, major surgery, cardiac medications, or the fear that follows a life-threatening medical event.
At Veritas, psychiatric care is offered through a lens that appreciates both the medical/surgical complexity of cardiac recovery, and the human need for meaning, reassurance, discipline, and hope.
